How To Apply the PE Protective Film?

Application to large, flat surfaces

NB PE protective film is as easy to apply as tape. However, as the width and length of the tape/film strip increase, the difficulty factor may increase a little. The physical behavior of handling a 4-foot wide x 8-foot long piece of tape is completely different than handling a 1-inch wide x 4-inch long piece of tape.

The bigger challenge is getting a large piece of film to align perfectly with the target surface and then laying it down without creating those unsightly wrinkles or bubbles that can reduce the perceived value of the protected surface.

One method of application is to have two people apply the film. One person holds the roll of film while the other pulls the loose end to the other end of the target material, secures one end to the target surface, and then manually presses the film into place, working toward the person holding the roll of film. This method is a bit laborious, but it works well.

Another method of manually applying a large sheet of film to a large sheet of material is to apply the material to the film. The following procedure describes a relatively simple method of applying a large sheet (4.5 x 8.5 feet) of protective film to a 4 x 8-foot sheet of material. You will need a roll of double-sided tape and a hobby knife. (Note: The material in question should be able to withstand a certain amount of physical handling in order for the method to work successfully.)

How to apply the protective film?

Prepare a large enough, flat workspace - larger than the object to be protected - that is clean and free of dust, liquids, or contaminants.

Apply a 4.5-foot strip of double-sided tape ...... to each end of the workspace approximately 8.5 feet apart. These will be used to hold the film in place, not the material to be protected.

With the adhesive side facing up, unroll a small section of the protective film. Make sure it is smooth and wrinkle-free, and place the loose end evenly on one of the double-sided tapes.

Continue to unroll the protective film, spreading it along the length of the work surface until it is slightly away from the other double-sided tape.

Now, lift the roll up and unroll it over the double-sided tape. Being careful not to pull the originally attached end off the tape, adjust the alignment of the film to make sure it is straight, wrinkle-free, and properly pulled tight, but not so tight that the film will shrink later. (When the film is stretched during the application, the edges tend to pull upward as the film tries to regain its original shape.)

Lower the film onto the second strip of double-sided tape.

Using a hobby knife, cut the roll from the now-fixed film that is waiting to receive the sheet to be protected.

Place one edge of the sheet flat on one end or side of the protective film. Place it on the inside of the double-sided adhesive tape holding the film in place.

Gradually place the part on the adhesive film. Note: If the material sheet is flexible, bend it slightly as you place it on the film, thus rolling it down and allowing air to escape from between the material and the film.

To ensure that the material sheet adheres to the film, apply pressure to the material, especially along all edges, to ensure a good bond. To do this, use a clean paint roller.

Use a hobby knife to outline the part of the protective film and cut off the excess film. Remove the excess and discard.

Carefully turn the part over and, if needed, apply pressure directly to the film, working from the center outward to ensure that the entire area well adheres.
