How to Make Tape Stick Better?

Nov. 16, 2022

If you are struggling with non-stick tape or any other type of tape, there are steps you can take.

Clean the surface

Tape works best when the surface area is clean, which means 100% free of dirt, oil, and debris. You want to eliminate anything that can get between the surface and the tape for direct contact with the adhesive.

Use the right tape

Tape is versatile, but that doesn't mean that one tape can handle all types of work (although duct tape comes close). When you have a project that requires joining two surfaces, make sure you use the right tape for the job. For example, if the surface is not very smooth, use tape with a thick adhesive.

Storing tape properly

Store tapes at room temperature, away from light and moisture, to prolong their life. Tapes stored in humid and hot environments will degrade faster than tapes stored properly. Low temperatures can also dry out the adhesive, making the tape almost worthless.

Using New Tapes

If your old tape isn't stored properly, or if it's old, it's time to pick up a new roll of tape. Just like anything, the tape is not invincible against time. Double-sided tapes are susceptible and therefore need to be replaced more frequently.

Check the temperature

If the tape or surface is too hot or too cold, it won't stick. If it's sweltering hot outside, wait until it cools down at night before applying the tape. If it's too cold, try heating the tape and surface before using it.

Clean your hands

If your hands are greasy or dirty, they can break the tape's adhesion. If you have recently used oil or applied lotion, the grease will get on the tape and break its adhesion.

Likewise, dirt and mud can get between the surface and the adhesive and break the bond.

When in doubt, test. Start by simply using a different roll of tape - preferably the same tape, but from a different batch - to determine if the problem still exists. It's all about experimentation and problem-solving. If you've checked our list and tried everything and your tape still isn't sticking, please contact us. We love solving tape challenges!
