PROTECTIVE FILMS

What Is Surface Protection Film?

Sep. 09, 2022

Even if you haven't used protective films in your own applications before, you're probably familiar with their presence in many of the products you buy every day. By now, you may have actually come to expect to find protective films on every new i-Something, TV, computer monitor, or major appliance you buy. Your customers may also expect to find the magic of protective film on your products.

In its simplest form, a temporary surface protection film is a layer of plastic coated with a special pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA). A key word when describing protective film adhesives is "temporary". By design, the temporary surface protection film is not intended to remain on the surface indefinitely. We have all experienced the irritation of trying to remove a so-called temporary price tag from a new gadget and having the tag tear into strips and/or leave a sticky residue. This is highly undesirable in protective films.

The most common types of plastic used in protective films are

  • LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene).

  • Co-Ex (co-extruded low-density polyethylene).

  • PVC (polyvinyl chloride).

PVC is usually a little more expensive and is used for special applications such as metal forming and exterior window protection where the film will be exposed to sunlight for up to a year. LDPE treated with UV inhibitors can also be used for outdoor applications. To avoid problems, do not use internally rated films in external applications.

Film thickness is often described as the total thickness of the plastic and adhesive. In the USA, the film is measured in thousands of inches or mils. (This is not the same as millimeters.) Typical film thicknesses range from 1 mil to 6 mils and sometimes higher. The thicker the film, the better it protects against abrasion, scratches, etc. Thicker films tend to be tougher and more difficult to apply to contoured surfaces.

The type of adhesive is also an important consideration. Textured surfaces usually require a thicker and softer adhesive. If the adhesive only touches the 'peaks' of the surface, it may not touch 5% of the total surface area and will tend to peel off the surface. Adhesives for textured surfaces also tend to have higher tack values.

Tackiness or adhesive tack is measured in ounces per inch. For best performance, it is best to use the lowest adhesion value that adheres well enough to hold the film to the surface for its lifetime. Using a higher level of adhesion than required increases the risk of the film being difficult to remove or leaving adhesive residues. For example, a protective film used to protect mobile phone LCD screens has a tackiness of about 1 oz/inch. Films used to protect carpets have a tackiness of 25 oz/inch or higher. Using carpet protective film on LCD monitors may pull the monitor apart when the film is removed.

NB Technology aluminum profile protection film acts as a barrier to protect your aluminum profiles from damage during transport, storage, processing, and installation. It is mainly used for the coated part of aluminum alloys, the heat-colored part, the oxidized and polished part, the surface protection of plastic profiles, plastic steel doors, window profiles, etc.

Aluminium Profiles Surface Protective Film

The surface protection film for aluminum profiles has 3 characteristics.

1. Stable bonding strength.

2. Excellent weather resistance, UV resistance, and anti-aging ability.

3. No residual adhesive left after peeling.
