Best Way to Remove Plastic Film from Appliances

Dec. 26, 2022

Removing protective plastic from refrigerator and other appliance surfaces is not difficult, but pulling on the thin coating can cause scratches or marks on the exterior of the appliance. If the delivery team has not removed the protective film from the front and sides of the appliance, it is up to you to pull this off the surface of the refrigerator, oven, dishwasher, or other appliance.

Purpose of Protective Film

The plastic protective film that holds drawers and shelves inside appliances can be annoying and definitely not attractive, but it does serve a purpose. It protects the finish from the time it leaves the factory to the time it is delivered to your home. When an appliance is being transported, the protective film prevents it from rubbing against other objects, cardboard, or being knocked around during transport and installation.

The thick protective film ensures that the sliding drawers and glass shelves are held firmly in place. Movement during transport could break the fragile slides or crack the glass shelves.

How to Remove Protective Plastic Film?

Step 1: Use the edge of a plastic putty knife or blade to gently slide under the edge or corner of the plastic film. If the corners of the protective film are tight against the surface of the appliance, look for bubbles or other spaces emerging from the edges of the film.

Step 2: Twist the corners or edges of the plastic film until it gradually loosens its grip on the smooth surface. Working slowly and at an angle, lift the plastic film off the appliance. If it tears, it may be more difficult to remove. However, if you lose your grip or it tears before it is completely off the outer wall, simply start again. Just be careful not to scratch the surface when you push the razor blade or even the plastic edge under the film to remove it.

Step 3: The film around the unit may also be attached by thick protective tape. Remove the tape in the same way as you would with a large sheet of clear plastic. The tape usually leaves some adhesive residue. Do not scrape it off. Hold it down with your fingers and roll it onto itself until you can pull it out of the surface of the appliance.

Step 4: The film is there for protection, but once removed, the front of the appliance and trim need a quick clean to remove any residue or static cling, which attracts dust and dirt. A quick wipe with a clean rag dipped in alcohol will pick up any fine residue on the plastic film. The alcohol will also evaporate quickly and will not leave any streaks.
