5 Common Problems With Surface Protection Films

The following are the most common challenges we have found during our use of tapes and surface protection films in recent years.

Poor surface adhesion. If the film peels off too easily, there could be a number of reasons.

The surface is not clean enough or is contaminated with dust or moisture.

If the project uses the incorrect film, it can easily result in an insufficient amount of adhesive or too low adhesion for the climate and conditions.

The film was not stretched evenly during installation, causing distortion and therefore poor sealing.

• Debonding. If the film actually separates from the adhesive, it will leave a residue on the surface. Use a clean cloth dampened with a suitable amount of organic solvent (e.g. ethanol or acetate) to remove the adhesive. Care should be taken during this step to avoid causing additional cosmetic problems to the protected surface during removal.

• Edge Lift.  This occurs when the end of the protective film begins to lift away from the surface. This is common in metal protection using laminated protective films and occurs particularly with aluminum as opposed to steel. Again, a film suitable for this job will make a difference.

• The film cannot be removed. The most common cause of this problem is the quality of the pressure-sensitive adhesive. Beware of manufacturers who have not mastered the art of producing this very specialized adhesive. Some simply adapt ordinary adhesives by making some improvements to existing formulations - with disastrous consequences.

Another reason for the difficulty in removing the film may be excessive exposure to sunlight. This is why the UV rating of the film and determining how long you need it to adhere is an essential pre-installation decision.

• Ghosting. One of the main goals of any construction project is to make a seamless transition that leaves practically no evidence. When visual imperfections are evident on an otherwise protected surface, the main cause of this "ghosting" is the residue left by markers, cleaners, and solvents previously used to clean the surface. These can be removed with care and diluted solvents.
